Get ready for the rendezvous!

All ages learn to appreciate and enjoy the beautiful outdoors on this week-long experience. Families embrace the life of the French-Canadian traders and trappers who explored the beautiful North Woods of Minnesota in the 1800s at our base camp on Turtle River Lake near Bemidji, Minn.

Even today, nearly 200 years after the height of the beaver fur trade, many people enjoy learning about that historical time and re-enacting it in outdoor museums or re-enactment festivals.

Learn More Than Language Skills

Adventure and exploration define every day as you work with your family brigade mastering basic wilderness skills. You’ll spend lots of time in l’eau and every night ends around le feu de camp. Given the outdoor nature of the program, participants learn a great deal of French orally and through the practice of repeated tasks. Participants will be taught and are expected to canoe, cook and live outdoors in all weather, including rain.

Learn About Native Cultures

One of the many things we love to do here chez les Voyageurs is eating amazing food that we cook ourselves over an open fire each day. With native foods available like wild rice and maple sugar, voyageurs in the 1800s learned to live off the land like their Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) neighbors. And since the true voyageurs made meaningful and lasting relationships with the native peoples of these Northern woods, we focus heavily on learning about how indigenous communities lived and thrived on the waters we all learn to love.

All villagers, regardless of language level or previous camping experience, grow into a tight-knit community that can accomplish anything they set their minds to!
