Virtual Villages: Program Overview

What is a Virtual Village?

Virtual Villages | Est. 2020

Concordia Language Villages blazed a trail forward in online immersion education, by creating a supportive, globally-focused community of teachers and learners in the virtual space virtual immersion with real language, real culture and real people.

Throughout summer 2020, over 2,400 participants from across the United States (and abroad) enrolled in 14 languages: Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

Two types of virtual sessions were launched to deliver intensive language and cultural immersion: high school credit sessions (the equivalent of one year of high school language credit from beginner to advanced, with seven hours daily of synchronous and asynchronous instruction) and one-week informal sessions for youth aged 8-18 at all levels of language proficiency.

We knew parents would be skeptical of more “screen time” for their children. The teaching staff collaborated by language, and across languages, continually brainstorming and discussing as they evolved the Virtual Villages day to day, week to week.

What are parents saying? 99% reported programs met or exceeded expectations.

“BRAVO!!! ... Through creativity, joy and thoughtfulness you gave my daughter a wonderful experience.”

“Five stars from this Papa.”

Most importantly, Concordia Language Villages entered the virtual teaching world with a commitment to evolving best practices in the field. The Virtual Villages took hold and will remain a vibrant part of the language and cultural programs.

What Do Virtual Villages Look Like?

Our primary goal is to offer safe and fun language and cultural learning for youth and adults throughout the year. We have expanded our youth offerings into the academic year with virtual high school credit, classes and clubs while our adult offerings have expanded with virtual weeks, coffee hours, discussion circles and classes.

Participants will be fully immersed in creative and fun ways in small groups—virtual interaction enabling villagers to also live the language at home and in their own communities. Here’s a glimpse into what you can expect:

  • Real-time language and cultural immersion with our world-class Village staff.
  • Fun, interactive and creative experiences - all in the target language!
  • Real friendships with villagers from across the globe!
