Teaching World Language Textbook Topics Through the Lens of Social Justice Cassandra Glynn, Ph.D., Director, Master of Education in World Language Instruction This webinar is based on the 2014 book published by ACTFL, Words and Actions: Teaching Language Through the Lens of Social Justice. The webinar will begin by providing tips for teachers on how to integrate social justice into their world language classes. This will be followed by a step-by-step process for adapting typical topics in traditional world language classes to be taught in a contextualized manner through the lens of social justice. What do native US Spanish speakers believe about dialects of Spanish as spoken around the world? Are there dialects they believe are better or worse than others? What may be the reasons behind these beliefs? This webinar will explore these questions by presenting findings from studies that use methods from folk dialectology, a branch of linguistics. This session may be of particular interest to teachers who want to include more information about US Spanish in their courses and teachers of heritage Spanish speakers.

What comes to your mind when you are thinking about teaching culture in your Chinese classroom? Chinese New Year? Paper-cutting? Peking Opera? Dumplings? While those topics are truly very unique to the culture and easily designed, it is important to realize and reaffirm that much more culture exists beyond the realm of foods and festivals.
